At the K Club this week

*DEVIANT (community skratch / alphabet set / stress debt & chest pains)
*JIMMY PENGUIN (comm skratch / alkalinear)
*!KABOOGIE Residents

Thurs 17 Feb
10pm – 02:30am
@ The Sweeney Mongrel, Dame St., Dublin 2.
FREE

In the run-up to one of Ireland’s best weekend events, the annual Community Skratch Games in Galway, !Kaboogie are delighted to welcome two of its guiding spirits, Irish West Coast hip hop legends, DEVIANT & JIMMY PENGUIN, to the East side(Dublin).

DEVIANT
Deviant has been releasing out some of the most interesting leftfield hiphop of recent times. And that’s not restricted to Ireland. Using sound sources of Irish and English trad music, Prog, and Jazz. Scratched, looped and processed live. A refreshingly bumpy road towards composition and not content to let a computer do all the hard work. Relying on a stack of obscure records, some battered turntables and a good ol’ fashioned warped imagination, Deviants work has intense dedication and individual eccentricity slapped all over it.

JIMMY PENGUIN
Even just glancing over this chaps output over the last few years makes you realise that words like “prolific” and “dedicated” are almost understatements. Jimmy Penguin is one of Ireland’s hidden electronic diamonds. Hailing from Galway in the blustery west of Ireland, Jimmy makes music that varies between sultry bass heavy electronics, progressive scratch and slow burning ambient tracks richly orchestrated with organic instrumentation. Yep this guy is a jack of all trades. If you like what you hear, then prepare your hard drive for a feck-load of quality free tracks and mixes that are available online.

It starting to feel like going to confession when I blog (apart from putting up radio shows) – ‘forgive me father,  it’s been twenty years since my last confession…’ etc. This post is to round up a few gigs that are on at the moment. A lot of good stuff , local and international on this week. And a shout(lovely dj slang) out to everybody in Galway for making Bap to the Future a great night, during the gig and after. Boom shaka laka.

Tonight the Kclub with the Standard crew. It’s a night showing our appreciation of City Discs, a top Dublin record shop which is closing. I feel obscurely guilty about this as I’ve seriously reduced the number of records I buy over the last 18 months ie. since I began using serato. I was a major vinyl loyalist, but no longer  in fact I’ve been heard to gleefully shout ‘fuck vinyl!’. If dj’s stop buying vinyl the games is up.Which is sad but there ya go.

And tomorrow night the launch of  Big Monster Love‘s album ‘Game Over’. It’s available here. Support on the night come from Moutpiece and Brian Kelly.

There’s a bunch more (such as Ramadaman and Mosca on Saturday) but put them up later.

Two strangely similar but very different gigs this weekend. Brother Ludo and I playing as Homoludo on the bill with Subversus this Friday in support of  Basek (mix to check) at mad chiptune and video game night Gamepak. Also playing elsewhere in the venue  that night are Martyn, who with Kode 9(link to a good review of his dissapointing book, Sonic Warfare) played my fav set at Block this year) and Dj Yoda…which is nice. And on Sat I think I’m playing at some diy media party thing also but will post when I know more.

And (again) on Sunday, Big Monster Love, sings of history in the digital age and love as social networking in Bewley’s Grafton street.

!Kaboogie presents: Squire of Gothos / Scheme Boy / DJ Rodfather, January 29 2010, The Cavern - Isaac Butts. (opposite Busaras), Dublin Ireland

January 29 2010, The Cavern – Isaac Butts. (opposite Busaras), 10:30pm – 2:30am

Squire of Gothos (Coin Operated), Schemeboy (Ninja Columbo), DJ Rodfather (!Kaboogie)

Following on from the massive 4th birthday party gig recently, !Kaboogie will be bringin’ plenty more heft with this tasty event which sees the Irish debut of UK bassline rave-steppers THE SQUIRE OF GOTHOS, along with a welcome return from London’s SCHEME BOY. With support from !K-head DJ RODFATHER, this promises to be a right rowdy demon of a night. Sheeeeeeeeeet!

THE SQUIRE OF GOTHOS (Coin Operated Records / Electrostimulation Records / Tigerbeat 6)

Hailing from Sheffield, The Squire Of Gothos are one of the most original acts to emerge from the bassline sound of recent years. Their unique brand of raved-up, glitched-out, filthy bassline wonkyness demonstrates their knowledge in the fine art of dancefloor destruction. , these messers have quickly built up a dedicated fanbase through monster live shows and quality releases on Electrostimulation Records and Coin Operated Records, the latter being the well hefty ‘Clam Smasher EP’. A string of free mixes, some of the finest of 2009, have since solidified their position as masters of bounce. This gig sees them hitting Irish shores for the first time. Nnot to be missed.

SCHEME BOY (Ninja Columbo / Bang-A-Rang Records / Cock Rock Disco)Scheme Boy is a London based producer and dj, whose styles vary from dirty dub techno breaks to all-out banging melodic hardcore. Always intense, his live sets have torn apart dancefloors and eardrums at gigs and festivals across Europe for over 5 years. His last Dublin appearance at a monster gig in McGruders in 2008 was a highlight of a night that also featured sets from Cardopusher, Milanese and Ebola. !Kaboogie presents: Fourth Birthday bash!, January 15 2010, The Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey St., Dublin 1, Dublin Ireland

January 15 2010, The Twisted Pepper, Middle Abbey St., Dublin 1, 10pm

!Kaboogie celebrates four years of bringing the futhermucking BASS to Dublin with a whopper, two-floor line-up in the Twisted Pepper on Friday 15 January. With Terror Danjah, Wadadda, Moutpiece, Gramophone Disco and North Strand Kontra Band

The ground floor of the Twisted Pepper will be a little different to the (un)usual !Kaboogie fare, with Gramophone Disco hosting the evenings festivities and also doing a little decoration job on the place! Supremo Dublin punkers Moutpiece will be lashing it out, followed by the jump-up specialists North Strand Kontra Band.

Down in the bassment we’ll have the mighty Terror Danjah, hot off his recently released “Gremlinz” album on Planet Mu. Expect grime that’d put even Mr Muscle into a panic. Further bass treats come all the way over from Germany, with the dubbed out skank and bounce of Wadadda. Tactical bass support on both floors from the lovely !Kaboogie residents.

The night shall be kicking off at ten bells. Cos we is soooo nice to you, it’s only a MERE FIVER in before 11, then a tenner afterwards. Come down and celebrate with us, it’s gonna be mental buzz!

The overall atmosphere is a dizzying party of great music and dancing. It is a sanctuary for those weary of the over stimulated post modern world.Playing dirty ditties at a shindig near you soon.

Moutpiece“..Dublin garage spazmo rockers mouthpiece, a fiery collective of absurdity and madness rolled into a rock n’roll machine of power.Loud, fast, obnoxious bursts of guitar fuelled mayhem, the band was formed by Gaz Moutpiece and Derek Gihad, armed with a blistering bag of riffs and a voracious thirst for everything, they recruited Tommy Trousers on bass duties and set off on the road. Tours of Holland, Ireland and festival appearances ensued and the spazmo garage punk rock n’roll was brought to the masses, who enjoyed it immensely.Conzo Hercules joined to add more guitar mayhem into the mix and now with a new album on the streets, Moutpiece are set to go into hyper drive, so don’t miss ‘em…”

Turns out Moutpiece can’t play due to snow related injury.

Bogdan flyer

The man Bogdan playing- His music is fun, fucked up, charming , innocent and banging(at the same time!) and my favourite of the wave that included; Sqaurepusher, Mike Paradinis, Aphex et.

The last time he played, he was drunk /out of it-

all the idm heads were getting really pissed off, he kept falling on
the table with his laptop and rolling around,
kept getting pulled off, hitting play again, then falling again, as portions of
the crowed got more pissed off.

I was cheering.

one of me fav gigs ever!

Pleased to be on the bill, I’ll try and lash up a mini mix of his music before the gig.

This looks like fun, for those me included who feel strangely stirred by the sound of Pacman dying. Still not that keen on commodore owners either.

Six foot apprentice and I are warming up for Herv and The Vinny club at the launch of their split single on Richter Collective tonight. Herv’s sets have been blowing me away, with a warm detroit motor soul infusing his patented brew of idm and breakcore.

The Vinny club is famed for putting on a great show with super mario guitar hero antics in his live sets.

The first 200 get a copy of the single.
