Last Saturday’s radio-show recorded in the few days between returning to Dublin from doing the underground piano bar (Michael Eavis - “most magical night of my life”- Q magazine, he recommends us a minute into the clip above) in Glastonbury and heading to Berlin with my primate group for a month. Having fun running around here listening to mixes - last one was this classy mix from Jamie xx available here. (smooth dj link)Saw the xx at glasto, good set with the obligatory ‘glasto moment’, where Florence machine came on and sang an imitation of her sampled part on the xx remix of ‘You’ve got the love’.  I will update this post later with some photo’s,  first have to wrestle with apple corp anti usability and bastardness policy to get some pics off one of their machines.

Last weeks show starting with a few from the new Ikonika album which has made of a total convert of me. Check the mix between Heston and Scratcha dva’s Ganja- a mix made in heaven, specifically Clangers heaven, with the Clangers singing duets, (aside -ever notice how hauntology is often just nostalgia for the sounds of children’s TV? Literally the nanny state ((more aside - rave kind of started in this mode of nostalgic play with Charley)) ) . A couple of funky bangers follow then into Noid the Droid’s excellent eclectic excursion, enjoy. (the last tune is one of the best from Starkey in while and is linked for download and excuse the ((not many)) stereo drops )

Last weeks radio show, starting off with an interesting  remix for cash of Rox from Terror Danjah getting on a charty dubstep/grime sound as does the Untold K$$sha remix later in the show. A highlight of Bloc was Loops Haunt mixing his own and others tunes on serato and the bass sound in Rubber Sun Grenade is a ‘ how did he do that moment’ . Into some UK funky then,  my attempt to capture some of the style Kode 9 and Martyn were rockin’ at this years Bloc: A UK funky base with slick US and European house and techno stylings on top, one of which had truncated Harold Faltermeyer style synths on and made me want a rum and coke and feel like Eddie Murphy’s Beverly hills cop on the dance floor. I’m on the hunt for the track list.

There are some stereo to mono drops as the mixer was acting up somewhat leading to me spending a lot of time holding leads against the back of the  mixer, so please excuse and I lay the blame for the bag of clocks falling down stairs that is the Booty la la mix there also(good when it works, honest!).

First time I’ve prerecorded my show in ages and did it at home for the first time. Highlights include crystalline psych bass from James Blake’s Harmonimix project, some of the most blasting and interesting music I’ve heard in ages from Franck Vigroux, which to me points to a way of making music without trying to sound like you’re from London, Bristol or Brighton(much as I love em all). Other faves are Thrill Kill Kults’ paean to drugs and booze, some nasty upcoming releases from !kaboogie and more psych bass from Kelpe and Slugabed. Linked tunes downloadable.

Jimmy Sabater

Not many posts over last week or so as mucusoid like, I keep dropping mucus on the keyboard and can’t find the firefox plug in to fix this.

heralds of change cover

This show from the Saturday before last - starts of with a selection of tunes from amazing Irish/Scottish Heralds of Change- quality tunes with loads bass and crunch. Couldn’t believe I hadn’t heard more. Had the Ooops remix since the start of the summer but hadn’t sussed the celtic connection ’till I realised that Heralds of change(Mike Slott and Hudson Hawke) are on Dublin label All City. I was struck by their in tuneness with Rustie and sure enough they work in a crew with Rustie and others- info here- running a club etc. They are getting lots of attention from the likes of Mary Anne hobbs, Starkey and others and are just finishing a US tour. Lots of their mixes can be found here. Hope to maybe feature some of these guys at an upcoming !Kaboogie gig- am on it. It shouldn’t go unremarked that local talent and a local label are making such  a splash with such quality tunes. It’s really well made - check out the flow and arrangement on Trip fall.

Squelch house in the middle with an great track off the (not so) new Matmos album and  the amazing township riddim by Dj Mujava out of South Africa.

Finishing up with a highspeed grime, dubstep and bassline mix that follows the circle of fifths fact fans.

Mighty sparrow

Starting with some calypso from the occasionally maligned Harry Belafonte,( the line being that he exploited ‘real’ calypso- I don’t have much time for the keepers of ‘tradition’) this sounds like Barney McKenna of the Dubliners was playing tenor banjo in Trinidad(picture him in blackface) . Check king of calypsonians Mighty Sparrow’s Erasmus B Black as possibly the best tune ever. Those who know me can guess the extra reason for my current fascination with this tune.

Other highlights Ed Devane and Judas the bimboy’s remixes on the forthcoming Super extra bonus party remix album (launching in Andrew’s lane next weekend for those in Dublin) and a half hour prog synth work out from the new Matmos product. I’ll try to fix up the tracklist later.

  1. Harry Belafonte - When the yankees are gone
  2. Mighty Sparrow -The yankee way
  3. Mighty Sparrow-Erasmus b black
  4. Roots manuva - Again and again - moody boys remix
  5. heavy art –0
  6. cotti v mr parti feat jammer dem fi know
  7. A&e Dept -  The rabbit’s  name was (mixed on top of the last one)
  8. Zomby -Liquid dance hall
  9. drums
  10. zomby
  11. Bass junkie
  12. computer people
  13. Bass junike - circuitry
  14. Matmos -supreme balloon  - Half hour track to the new album
  15. Girl
  1. Ed Devane -Super extra bonus party remix
  2. Judas de Bimboy -  Super extra bonus party remix
  3. Postal Service- The district sleep alone tonight - DJ Downfall remix

Me getting gramophied

The Wind up merchant -me getting all Gramophied in the Gramophone disco at the Electric picnic(with 2bit peeking out from behind the gramophone). More gramophone disco photos to follow. Thanks to Atary Flynn for the picture.

Catching up and posting some shows, a couple more in the bag to go up.

This has a classic remix of a tricky track mashed with an excellent 160 bpm breakcore(ish) tune from system drills  into a Mr Scruff tune. Then morphs into a kind of mutant electro/house/mash thing… didn’t  get the second half of the show due to hitting the space bar…

score for Rumenye

Just spent a few days in Berlin after coming from Croatia. Had some great pictures of all the baldy pigeons there but my camera got scrambled.

Appropriately enough recorded this show of balkan/eastern high energy with Keven Culhane before I left. The first record is mine - Nathan Szpiro met his wife after being part of a Jewish regiment that liberated the concentration camp she was in. He’s a Klezmer Vaudevillian -I’ll post the record cover when I get home, it’s hilarious. The rest are Kev’s selections, he’ll be Dj’ing with us at the Gramophone Disco at Mantua next week and the electric picnic at the end of August.

the setting sun

Excuse the radio silence over the last few weeks. I’ve been traveling/doing some pesky college work etc. Also had some probs getting some of my recent shows off the system in the radio show. But all sorted now and while I’m still away alot over the next few weeks, have a few stored up for you like…

This one, starts out with a few tunes on the amazing buy out riddim, and is generally on a ragga/reggae mash tip. Check T-woc’s/Brother cultures -The warning. To my knowledge the best Eire reggae seven inch ever! (maybe the only one). It’s mixed up a bit with the excellent Jahtari’s Brand new second hand. Other treats include Lexus’ versioning over Billie Jean…

Away from my tunes so will fix up the track list later. The Dj takes no responsibility for any slight skips/distortion and is running gigs to get new decks.

1. Beenie man - Row like a boat

2. Sean paul - Like glue

3. ashanti – Rock with me

4. what’s love?

5. Dj xela/ General levy

6. General levy

7. Brother Culture/twoc -The warning

8. Jahtari - Second Hand man (Ft Mikey Murka)

both of these kind of worked for a bit.

9. Matt shadatek - Girlfriend rmx

10. South rakkas crew-mad again

11. slick rick - Mona lisa

12. kid sister - damn girl

13. lexus - Billie medley

14. The french house one with a euro symbol on it….can’t remember

Hi, this weeks show(actually from a couple of weeks ago:a new system in the station and my own time traveling— causing some delays). Split into three parts.

Solen ten inch image

Part one starting off with an old Tenor Fly track to put some spring in your step, followd by a paen to sex and solvent abuse in Limerick from the Rubberbandits.

Part two is a few tracks from Japenese band - The Polysics who sound like the Ramones making cartoon theme tunes - with added 8bits. Makes perfect sense. And the videos are great too.

Part three starts with some pressure from Prince Kong (recently getting play from the BBC’s Mary Anne Hobbs and MTV 2) feat Jah Balance. Two new excellent new dubs, the second of which ‘Stamina’ gets under your skin like lice(coming out on twelve soon). Next in this section a dub from Bombaman followed by the A side of the new double A ten inch from Solen, the epic ‘Lord’ , coming out on Dublin’s Alphabet set label. The cover image (above) is one of the best pictures I’ve seen of Ballymun, the place where I learnt my nasty Dublin Irish .

Part one
1. Tenor Fly - The Brightside of life
2. The Rubberbandits - Bags of Glue
3. The South rawkus crew - Hotter den them
4. Tenor Fly - Invincible
5. Daleduro - Bombon Asesino
6. Sabres of paradise - Haunted Dance hall(red snapper remix)

8. Young mc - Know how - Gutter remix

Part two
9. The Polysics - Get Back to 8bit
10. The Polysics - Electric surfin’ go go

Happy birthday hardcore Jungle!

Dj C noticed this recently.
Had been feelin’ the stuff recently (see earlier) so thought I’d do a show and a post. All the tracks below are from 93 which makes this year its 15th birthday. A good chunk of them are from Hardleaders III on Kickin’.

front sleeve of Hardleaders 3

This style kind of suits cheesy compilations and to my knowledge this is the best one. It’s at the point where hardcore and rave are becoming jungle proper, so I’m mixing up the whole album for y’all.Followed by more tunes from the period.
It’s my favourite time in the music, it’s lost the frivolousness of rave, but the rules and patterns that eventually became so predictable and boring have yet to set. Anything goes - four fours, bagpipes, processed euphoric vocals reaching to other skies - as long as it’s in the service of a serious dance. It still feels futuristic, a potential future I’m nostalgic for.

From the back sleeve - The sound of Urban Jungle of the 90’s is now firmly set in a complex mixture of breakbeats, atmospheric keyboards and ethnic/tribal samples. UK ‘rave’ music has reached a level of sophistication that puts it on a par with the most advanced sounds. Every drumbeat is designed to fire the pleasure transmitters of the brain, providing the disillusioned youth of today with relief from the drudgery of everyday life in the urban wasteland.

1. Bay-b-kane - Hello Darkness(rmx)
2. Andy c - Something new pt 2
3. Rhythm for reasons - Music in search of light
4. Dj distroi & boykz - Darkside
5. Tango - Timebomb
6. Dj solo - Darkage
7. Dj Hype - Weird energy (hells bells mix)
8. Q bass -hype the funk (dj hype rmx)
9. Tango and ratty - Final conflict
10. Bay-b-kane - Bagpipes in effect
11. Acen - Window in the Sky
12. Omni Trio - Mainline (techno mix)
13. 4Hero - The element(highnoon)
14. Skanna - The greatest thing
15. 4Hero - The power
16. The FBD project- The core
17. 4Hero - In the shadow(sunrise remix)
18. Rude Boyz - Paragone (rmx)
19. The Undergraduates- into the future

Dispatch from the hardcore continuum(link)

It’s kind of the birthday of my dj’ing also.
This was around the time rave went over ground in Ireland (outside Sides and the Assylum). Multi media was a new buzz word (the Ormond multi media centre anybody?). Everybody who hadn’t already, was discovering being ‘on one’. Cyber lit. and systems ideas were currency, and their associated images were common.
example;I had a bee in my bonnet at time about the word ‘buzz’, swarm theory and hive behaviour; dance as communication etc.

illustrative of the hive mind

The previous year I was playing a mid week night downstairs in Fibber McGees called RadioCrush(in aid of radioactive with Crudden, Krossie and others), it was impossible not to notice that when I departed from the hip hop, punk, industrial and indie and dropped house and rave tunes the place went mental. Within a few weeks the set was all dance(all my dole and club wages going on dance wax). The crowd was full of dole punks and refugees from the weekend clubs looking to keep the buzz going. Open minded, they would go for a set starting with hip hop into Italian trance into house then techno up-to jungle, finishing with fast proto tekno. That was my first taste of ‘baleric’, as in playing anything to keep the energy going. The punk nature of it appealed to me- diy music in small runs by anonymous producers with an a communal, euphoric and anti system ethos. This felt completely new and some how right on the beat to somebody immersed in William Gibson, K. Dick etc. This experience made me decide that dj’ing was for me. As did the night when, shy kid that I was, I mistook the whoops, cheers and pointing of the crowd; I looked behind me, thinking ‘where’s the fire?’, turning back around and thinking ‘oh’ was a good feeling.
The night became two nights, but this open mindedness did not last and within a couple years playing a set like that was impossible as people chose styles to match their trainers and developed firm opinions about what music they liked. The splits were pronounced, even techno had sub genres where the crowds were mostly exclusive: Detroit, acid, idm, techhouse etc etc. I spent the next few years often getting into trouble playing the wrong music. It was serious business - house heads didn’t want any techno(’cept flash) ruining their buzz and the same went for every crew. It was hard to resist the temptation to drop something other- for me the fun and challenge was always in the creative, even incongruous mix. But fair enough, most people had spent a lot of money and effort on their buzz and didn’t want it messed with, no matter how creatively(and it must be admitted my skills didn’t always match my ambition and that kind of thing must be done right). Also, half the time, I did it just to f**k things up a bit;) [This was why Dj’s like Irish dj Rowen and Rupture were such a breath. They kind of legitamised that style, while raising it a couple of levels. The decrease in the popularity of dance a few years ago was good, in that in allowed a return to shitty clubs and open minds as exemplified by !Kaboogie in dublin and crews around the country].

Anyway the euphoria died off, dj’s became superstars and history ended with the Third way as the disappointing permanent future(this is why I’m building a time machine out of broken 78 records).

What I took from it all is that dj’ing and the music is a process. Something you do for the moment, the feeling and the dance. Notions of success in the culture industry miss the point . Not that I’ve anything against playing the game, but the real game is just to keep getting better and to keep doing it. Fire. Mos Def.

Women

This weeks show is based around the fact that one can mix pretty much anything with Dubstep. This elasiticity is what I like about it. So it’s a mix of one dubstep tune followed be something that isn’t and it doesn’t get more not dubstep then Kirsty McCall. It’s also about messing it up. In the last part I’m playing dubstep at 45, which I started doing ’cause it’s hard to buy good tunes in the 200bpm region. I’ve grown to like the sound and the idea that it’s a way out of the orthodoxy that can quickly grow up around a genre. It’s Ok most of the way, but there are some slips as I was tired from a six O’Clock start, college, and a beery evening with the lesbians after the International womens day march.

Brass attacks #1

brass fittings

This weeks show starts with some of my favourite brass band tunes. Had the best dance I’ve had in years when I saw the Rebirth brass band in Tipitina’s in New Orleans, a couple of months before the planned forced relocation of the population- when I was there people were telling me it was coming anytime now and their requests for water proofing would never be answered.

Got turned on to the brilliance of post-Quincy Jones, post hip-hop brass there, perfectly exemplified by ‘Casanova’ from the Rebirths below. Could feel my hair blowing back in the wind of brass. Dj Halfdutch chose the Hot 8’s version of sexual healing in my end of 07 show(check it - at the start of one the of the January shows). Brass’s rise in people’s minds and use in music from Winehouse to punk to indie is very noticeable these days. The Tuba bass sound has a lot of colour and power and a tuba powered top class brass band have to be heard to be believed.

Later in the show a couple of tunes from Mc Beezy’s new mixtape, who along with Durty Goodz just keeps bringing it. The rest features class irish dubstep taken from the new !Kaboogie cd and the new Twoc Vinyl (see side bar). Other highlights for me are the mix out of Bombaman’s remix in to some old hardcore from 4 Hero( the mutability of dubstep fascinates me at least as much as the music itself) and then back into some crisp work from Bassclef. Also pneumonia from Fog has to be heared.Posted this show late as homoludo and homofaber were having a bit of tussle, which wasn’t resolved till late in the week.

1. The Young blood brass band – Tuba solo
2. The Rebirth brass band – Cassnova
3. The Hot 8 brass band – Fly away
4. The Dirty Dozen brass band – Caravan
5. Tom waits – Hang on St Christopher
6. Fog – Wallpapersinkorswim
7. Fog - Pneumonia – coldcut mix

8. Mc Beezy – Mr Cunstable
9. Mc Beezy – Mr Dingaling
10. Hatcha and kromestar- White noise
11. 2Bit – EXP5
12. Twoc -Old and grey
13. Forsaken – Boat noodles
14. Road kill vs Hijack– Never sleep
15. Solvent – Think like us – Bombaman remix
16. 4 Hero – Journey from the light
17. Bassclef-808
18. A-Force – Kiki
19. Ed devane- Dubcore maximus
20. Bassclef- 1471
21. Symarip - These boots are made for walking

raggety boy

This week show is mostly techno from Scotland and the north of England, from the mid to late nineties. Weird bass, spidery clicking rhythms, lost processed voices. It was for me the most interesting techno of the period. it feels somehow current again. a lot of it could slip unnoticed into a dubstep set at the moment. I’ll write more and fix up the track list later.

poster in a shop in Marrakesh

I was over in Marrakesh for a few day over New years. I was a bit daunted by the prospect of standing listening to hours of Enya-like local music at one of the stalls selling best of Maroc Cd’s, when what I wanted was beats and Hip hop. Following my nose through the souk, I had the good fortune to hear some beats coming out of a shoe salesman’s shop. I stood listening for a while and when I made it clear that it wasn’t shoes I was interested in, we got down to listening to some tunes - he watching my face to see what I was nodding along to, then we got down to some bartering. This weeks show is based around the cd’s he sold me. Also some Soot records stuff (featuring some of the same rappers on the cd’s I bought) Muslimgauze and bits and pieces. Thank you shoe salesman!

I particularly like 3Awd Lil’s (the black horse) tunes. It turns out his lyrics are amazing also. I’ll post on him during the week- with some translations and add some links and info to this post.

Tracklisting

1. Imams prayer
2. Muslimgauze - Death of Saint Jarnaii Singh Bindranwale
3. 3awd lil - Fine tout fine

This weeks show starts off with some electro hip hop classics. Three hot toddys from Toddy Tee and Mixmaster Spade. Note particularly the excellent ‘do you wanna go to the liquor store?’

I’ll fix up the tracklist later…must ..drink.. must shop…

hot toddy

Partially fixed up. The show then goes into dubstep with a couple of old Scotish techno rollers from Dave Tarrida mixed in.
I have a soft spot for him because one of the first big gigs I ever played was supporting him at gig in the Ormond multi media centre circa 94/95.
A lot of the best techno was the north of England/Scottish stuff. Labels like Sativa, Predicaments and Scandinavia and Dj’s / producers like Dave Tarrida, Tobias Schmidt, Neil Lanstrumm, Christian Vogel( who runs the once[still?]excellent nofuture forum ) and Tube Jerk - influenced by Sheffield bleep and industrial music, with a dark rolling sense of space and an skittery insectoid funkiness their music tip-toes spideryly along a razorblade, between seduction and alienation. They draw you in without the co-option of the comfort zone that can ruin dance music. Their music will start to infect once again in 08 methinks. I feel a mix coming on…

Candice Breitz rorschach seies

And finishes with a couple of old deck mash ups - From stone into One night in hackney into Teenage kicks from Nouveau Vague(works, honest) and finishing with Breakin’ the Law one of the first mashes I ever did, which I’m still quite chuffed with so I’ve separated it out for you.

This weeks show starting off with some Space-age Bachelor pad musics I’ve been diggin’ this week. Rockin’ n’ Boppin’ X-mas tunes, electric organ solos, steelbands workouts, and film musics. I have a gig over Christmas in a (trying to be) fancy bar and went looking for some ‘cool’ cocktail musics. It’s an unusual challange - playing unobtrusively but not anonymously

Horroscope This weeks show features Guest DJ Rodney Timmins playing breaks, garage and widescreen grooves. The German garage and psychedelia really gets my kraut boat bobbing along. He plays an amazing track, Horrorscope, by reclusive millionaire synth dude Ralph Lundsten. Here’s a picture of Ralph in his evil disco lab. Ralph Lundsten

Great material for a Hammer (disco) House film.

Dr Phibes disco

Squee! Those crazy drunken Fins! Near the start of the show is an excerpt of a Squee set (it’s really Skwee, but there aren’t enough Sq words and the other meaning is fun. It’s obscure enough at the moment that I can call it what I want. Minimal anybody?) taken from seclusis radio. Stay tuned for lots more Squee! The dance style for this music is called ‘drunken stumbling’. The show finishes with some fresh dubsteppahs.

This weeks show was a Starkey special, with most of the tunes coming from the Philly Grimester. His podcast mix for Xlr8 is well worth checking out. As is his radio show with Dev79.

Starkey

He has Dubstep luminaries as guests on a regular basis and this week had a hilarious feature on ‘Squee’, a new style of music to which Finnish people drunkenly stumble to quote Dev79 ‘rythmic drukeness’. More on that anon.

Also on show was an excerpt from blogariddims 29 podcast- Lower end spasm or “Grimespasm” . This is my favourite mix from the excellent the Irish podcast series Blogariddims
