Been away for pretty much six weeks , lots of stuff. Berlin which was hot in the first das gaff.

hot in berlin

Highlights of which included hanging out with these wacky  atompunk sound artists.

And watching Prince Kong kissing babies.(pics to follow)

Within ten minutes of walking into said second gaff(above) , I found a Cd  of this Seeed Berlin anthem(below) which I’d lost a while ago and been looking for.Which correctly boded well for our stay there. Highlights of this stay included getting into Berghain on this visit (didn’t dig my beard, hat and dark glasses last time, the squares) and watching Richie !Kaboogie convert to HiNRG disco( no pics ’cause they’re banned in Berghain for that very reason) and tile graff artist Dj Tile cutters  exploits, in which he repeatedly failed to get into any clubs(‘cept one in the end).

In other news, with me on the radio show at 10.30 tonight and streaming here  is ( ex renowned D&B dj and now renowned Grime Dj)   Dj Bpm, an Irish Dj based in London. She blew up the K club(next -Lorn) on Thursday and did this great mix for us a while ago.

Also expect some of the tunes from this mix which is blowing my mind as I write.

Also I meant to blog this ages ago(but was on me hols), but if you haven’t heard Dj Gaz le Rock’s punk and garage show on 2xfm you’re missing out on some of the best radio RTE have put out in ages.

2fm Loving Room Floor 19 sept 2010 by Dj Gaz Le Rock Finally here’s the third installment in the ‘Wallets Full of Blood’ – Irish economic crash zombie movie series – ‘Roscommon Death Trip’ ’The injustice of time – rendered obsolete.’Rain falls on the snow. The Contagion has taken hold. Ghosts from the old Dead Republic are emerging everywhere as the day of judgement approaches. On Black Tuesday a guilt ridden political functionary runs from his job burying bodies in the city. He is tortured by voices of reproach as he journeys towards home. He recounts the history of his dealings with Fingers – a boss ‘who made the old boss look like Mother Teresa’.Meanwhile, back in the city, amid the spiraling negativity, Fingers and his acolytes lay the foundations for a new Easter Rising.

In other news-

Flicked onto one of those reality cop shows recently and saw two U.K. police hassleing two (eastern?) guys cause they were carrying a little scrap they’d tatted(like a foot or two). The police accused them of not bathing and needing to brush thier teeth!!??

Voice over: “Officers John and Mark struggle to deal with the smelly foreigners….”

Who was commiting an offence here?

And here’s a crazy calypso cover about it.

nut and bolts

Aoife’s Indie hour. Six foot apprentice and I playing and being interviewed about mashes and remixes ‘n all. The second half features Super extra bonus party chatting and playing some the tunes from their upcoming remix album.

It’s available here .

Also the DIY special she did last week. A really great show – people who do – talking about and playing tunes from the past and present of DIY in Dublin/Ireland (slightly weird to think of it as a “scene”, it’s just the way it’s done, isn’t it?) and Adebisi Shank in for the last section playing tunes from their new one .

This weeks show was a Starkey special, with most of the tunes coming from the Philly Grimester. His podcast mix for Xlr8 is well worth checking out. As is his radio show with Dev79.

Starkey

He has Dubstep luminaries as guests on a regular basis and this week had a hilarious feature on ‘Squee’, a new style of music to which Finnish people drunkenly stumble to quote Dev79 ‘rythmic drukeness’. More on that anon.

Also on show was an excerpt from blogariddims 29 podcast- Lower end spasm or “Grimespasm” . This is my favourite mix from the excellent the Irish podcast series Blogariddims

PCP ina Shuí

I do a radio show every week on Radio Na Life, called PCP ina Shuí, which is my Dj name.

The name PCP in Shuí ( ina Shuí means – sitting down) is kinda of a gag in Irish. Only people with some knowledge of seventies and eighties broadcast culture in Ireland get it, so I’ll explain: There used to be an Irish language chat show on RTE 1 tv called SBB ina shuí. This was presented by Séan Ban Breathnach – at the time a part of the seventies wave of cool gaeilgoir. This meant speaking and being proud of the Irish language and culture and wearing beads and chunky jumpers. Current exponents of the look would be the Kila lads and lassies. SBB had the same kinda kudos level.

At the time I started the show (94/5)it was unheard of to have beats on legal radio and it was odd (in a good, funny way) to be presenting them through Irish. This was the time of repetitive beat legislation in England and there was a frisson of danger to the whole thing. The name was a rhyming pun, mixing up the incongruous ideas of Dj names, chemistry culture, Irish language, beats on “official”the radio etc. It was funny at the time…

SBB has become a figure of fun for many, participating in b list celeb singing contests. But tall in my memory is the hirsute and beaded seventies culture warrior and the scandal in the RTE Canteen when his co-presenter breast fed her baby.

Sean Ban Breathnach and his wife Sean Ban Breathnach on your a star

SBB’s case is good illustration of the nature and longevity of ‘Cool’ and inevitablity of ending up as a dodgy cabaret performer( see Orson Wells, Dawkins) . So might as well embrace it.

I’ll try and find and post a picture of SBB in all his seventies gaeilgoir glory.
